SHAW’S — NEW ENGLAND’S FIRST FOOD RETAILER TO PURCHASE GREEN-E POWER

WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass, June 19, 2002 — Shaw’s Supermarkets today announced three of its stores in Rhode Island are purchasing a "Green-e" certified renewable energy product, making Shaw’s New England’s first food retailer to offer customers the opportunity to support renewable energy resources. Shaw’s has contracted with Sun Power Electric, a division of Conservation Services Group (CSG), to purchase ReGen, a renewable energy product for its supermarkets in Johnston, Barrington and Warwick, R.I. In addition, starting this summer, Shaw’s customers can obtain an application and information to purchase ReGen, a renewable energy product at these three R.I. stores for their homes or businesses.

Shaw’s purchase of ReGen, a Green-e certified renewable energy product, was developed under a solicitation by the Rhode Island Renewable Energy Collaborative. Currently, ReGen is a renewable energy product that consists of landfill gas and solar power. As more consumers and businesses purchase ReGen, more renewable energy supply will be developed in the New England Region. The effort is supported by local, state and regional groups, including R.I.’s largest electric utility company, Narragansett Electric Company, and Clean Air-Cool Planet, a regional environmental group. The program helps bring a renewable energy choice to consumers in the state.

The Green-e Renewable Energy Certification Program provides a quick and simple way for the public to identify environmentally superior energy options, or "products" nationwide. Green-e is a voluntary certification program for renewable energy products sold in competitive retail electricity markets, regulated markets, and nationwide through Tradable Renewable Certificates (TRCs). The Shaw’s and Sun Power Electric initiative in R.I. is a multi-year educational campaign to help increase consumer awareness about the environmental effects of conventional power generation and how supporting green power can make a difference in air quality. In addition to using Green-e certified energy, the three R.I. stores also received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR label, which signifies that they are amongst the top energy performing supermarkets in the country.

Conservation Services Group (CSG) is a not-for-profit energy conservation firm that is dedicated to energy conservation and renewable energy. For the past 18 years, CSG, of Westborough, Mass., has been a nationwide leader in offering energy conservation and renewable energy strategies for businesses, utilities and individuals.

Shaw’s Supermarkets, Inc. manages 186 Shaw’s and Star Market store locations and two distribution centers throughout the six New England states. The company serves more than four million customers each week and has nearly 30,000 associates. During the most recently completed fiscal year, total sales were $4.4 billion. Shaw’s is a wholly-owned subsidiary of J Sainsbury plc.
