Tradable Renewable Certificates (TRCs)

Tradable Renewable Certificates (TRCs or "green tags") are created when a renewable energy facility generates electricity. For every unit of renewable energy generated, an equivalent amount of renewable certificates are produced. Each unique certificate represents all of the environmental attributes or benefits of the renewable generation, namely the benefits that everyone receives when conventional fuels, such as coal, nuclear, oil, or gas, are displaced. You usually buy certificates from someone other than your electricity provider and you will continue to receive a separate bill from your utility. Your purchase of renewable certificates supports renewable electricity production, offsets conventional electricity generation in the region where the renewable generators are located, helps build a market for renewable electricity and may have other local and global environmental benefits such as reducing global climate change and regional air pollution.
