More About Shaw's Supermarkets

Sun Power Electric and Shaw’s Supermarkets have forged a new and exciting partnership! Shaw’s Supermarkets, Inc., which manages 186 Shaw’s and Star Market store locations and two distribution centers throughout the six New England states, has contracted with Sun Power Electric to purchase ReGen for three of its supermarkets in Rhode Island. The participating supermarkets are located in Barrington, Johnston and Warwick.

Shaw’s purchase of our ReGen product was developed under a solicitation by the Rhode Island Renewable Energy Collaborative (RIREC). This effort is supported by local, state and regional groups, including Clean Air-Cool Planet and Save the Bay and by Rhode Island’s largest electric company - Narragansett Electric Company.

Shaw’s is now matching 25% of its three participating stores with ReGen — about 2 million kWh per year, enough to power 320 homes each year. In doing so Shaw’s will be saving 2,855,619 lbs. of CO2, 17,986 lbs. of SOX and 3,656 lbs. of NOX per year — equivalent to the annual air emissions caused by 249 cars. In addition to supporting renewable energy the three Rhode Island stores also received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR label, which signifies that they are amongst the top energy performing supermarkets in the country.

Shaw’s has also become New England’s first food retailer to offer its customers the opportunity to support renewable energy resources. The Shaw’s and Sun Power Electric initiative in Rhode Island is a multi-year educational campaign aimed at increasing consumer awareness about the environmental effects of conventional power generation and how supporting green power can make a difference in air quality. As part of this initiative Shaw’s has a "Green Power Challenge" for its customers — if 1,600 or more consumers purchase ReGen for their homes or businesses all 13 Shaw’s Supermarkets in Rhode Island will match 25% of their energy with ReGen.
