Facts About Electricity

The electric industry creates more pollution than any other. That’s right! In New England, for example, over 80% of electricity is produced from conventional sources such as coal (52%), nuclear power (18%), natural gas (8%), oil (2%) and other fossil fuels (8%)*.

This releases large amounts of air pollution – especially carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Carbon dioxide is the main contributor to global warming. Sulfur dioxide causes acid rain, which damages our forests and lakes. Nitrogen oxides lead to smog, causing respiratory problems in children and the elderly.

What’s more coal, oil and natural gas are all non-renewable energy sources. They won’t last forever. And if this isn’t enough to worry about, there are also the safety issues associated with radioactive wastes from nuclear power plants.
